Foundation 1
This term
Foundation 1 and Secondary 1 are once again joining together and enjoying the
pool facilities at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre. Both classes are thoroughly enjoying this
opportunity and are working very hard towards improving their skills in the
water and achieving more swimming certificates.
New Siblands School enters the annual 'Thornbury in Bloom' competition to support the local community. Every pupil enters a painting and this year's theme is 'dig it, plant it, grow it, eat it'. These are judged and prizes given by the Mayor of Thornbury and takes place in July in the town centre.
In addition to this, this year all residents of Thornbury have been asked to make and display a scarecrow in their garden. New Siblands School decided each class would make a scarecrow and these will be displayed outside the front of the gates towards the end of June. If you've got time, come and have a look because they're really funny and the pupils have had a great time making them.
Primary 1

At the start of Term 5 two Police officers came to visit the school, their names were Natalie, who was a Police woman and Dawn who was a [P.C.S.C]
Police Community Support Officer.
They joined the pupils in the playground and chatted to them, they also attended one of the assembly's and demonstrated some of their equipment e.g. handcuffs and asp [baton] and explained what their jobs involved.
They joined Primary for lunch and then went into the classes to talk to the pupils and made them aware on how to stay safe, and the Police's job is to be there if they are needed.
In Secondary 1 we have been doing a Dig it, Grow it, Eat it, salad bar.
We have prepared the ground in which to sow our seeds, we planted the salad seeds, watered them and watched them GROW. We use the salad in our lessons and we have grown them to perfection. The slugs and snails were very kind to us they never had one bite; (they don't know what they were missing). We are going to give our kitchen staff the remainder of the salad as we feel the whole school should taste our wares.
The school has developed PLTS (personal learning and thinking skills) within the key stage 4 curriculum. Secondary 3 are researching the topic 'I want to be healthy' where they will carry out a project which involves researching and making healthy snacks. They will plan how best to advertise their product, by making posters or using a short video clip with the use of switches and other communication devices. They have to work as a team to decide how and when these snacks will be available to others. New Siblands equivalent to 'The Apprentice'.

Post16
In Post 16 we have started learning about the responsibilities of having a job. Each student has a job that they are expected to carry out daily. In return for completing their job they earn a wage. However a proportion of this has to be paid back in taxes. If for any reason they do not complete their job one day, they do not earn any money for that day.At the end of each week they are paid their wages, minus the tax and any days off. Each student has a bank box in school and they are encouraged to save their money. At the end of the term we are planning a shopping trip, where their savings can be spent.
The jobs include. Washing up Cleaning the tables
